The Lemosho Route is widely considered the most scenic and most rewarding route up Kilimanjaro — and at 8 days, it offers the best acclimatisation profile of any route on the mountain, resulting in the highest summit success rates of approximately 90%.
The route begins on the remote western face of the mountain, entering through pristine rainforest rarely visited by other trekking groups. It traverses the full width of the Shira Plateau, offering extraordinary views, before joining the Southern Circuit and approaching the summit via the Barafu Camp. The 8-day duration allows your body to adjust gradually to altitude — critical for success and safety above 5,000m.
Arrive at KIA. Transfer to Moshi hotel. Full pre-climb briefing, gear check and early dinner.
Drive to the remote Londorossi Gate on the western face. Enter pristine rainforest — far fewer trekkers than other routes. Trek to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp) through ancient forest.
Ascend through moorland with increasingly dramatic views of the Shira Plateau. Arrive at the vast high-altitude plateau of Shira 1.
Cross the full width of the Shira Plateau with spectacular Kibo summit views. Optional acclimatisation hike to Shira Cathedral (3,962m).
Climb high to Lava Tower (4,600m) for the critical "climb high, sleep low" acclimatisation, then descend to Barranco Camp beneath the famous wall.
Scramble the exciting Barranco Wall, traverse the Karanga Valley and arrive at Barafu Base Camp for the summit push. Rest through the afternoon and early evening.
Midnight departure in the dark and cold. Seven to eight hours of methodical ascent — Stella Point at dawn, Uhuru Peak by mid-morning. The Roof of Africa. Descend to Mweka Camp.
Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Certificate ceremony. Transfer to Moshi for shower, rest and a well-earned celebration dinner.
