Amboseli National Park sits in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro — Africa's highest peak at 5,895m — and offers one of the most iconic and photographed safari scenes on earth: great herds of African elephants moving across the open plain with the snow-capped summit rising behind them.
Amboseli is home to some of Kenya's largest elephant herds — family groups of 50 or more bulls, cows and calves roam the swamps and open grasslands. The park is also famous for its black-and-white colobus monkeys in the fever tree forest, its vast flocks of waterbirds and reliable sightings of lion, cheetah and giraffe on the open plains.
The park is relatively compact at 392 km², which means game is concentrated and viewable within a short drive from any lodge. The Observation Hill viewpoint provides a panoramic view across the entire park — elephants, swamps, plains and Kilimanjaro in one extraordinary frame.
On clear mornings, the snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro rises above the clouds — the perfect backdrop for elephant photography. Best visibility: early morning before 10am.
Amboseli is Kenya's best park for elephant viewing — herds of 50+ are common, with several well-studied family groups habituated to vehicles and approachable at close range.
The Enkongo Narok and Longinye swamps are fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro's snowmelt, attracting enormous concentrations of waterbirds and providing year-round water for wildlife.
The Maasai have coexisted with Amboseli's wildlife for centuries. Village visits and cultural experiences offer extraordinary insight into traditional Maasai pastoral life.
Best game viewing — dry conditions concentrate wildlife at water sources. Clear Kilimanjaro views.
Excellent game viewing, fewer vehicles. Good cheetah and lion activity.
Heavy rains and muddy roads. Not recommended. Some lodges close.
